Can you use retinol and salicylic acid together?
Best used at different times
Yes, but not as two leave-on products on the same night. A salicylic acid cleanser in the morning and retinol at night is an easy combination for most people.
Why
Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble exfoliant that works inside pores, which is why it's popular for blackheads and breakouts. Retinol also helps keep pores clear. Used together as leave-on products, though, they are often too drying, especially at the start.
A wash-off salicylic acid cleanser only stays on the skin briefly, so it adds much less irritation than a leave-on toner or serum.
How to use them
- Easiest: salicylic acid cleanser in the morning, retinol at night.
- With a leave-on salicylic acid product, use it on nights you don't use retinol.
- Follow both with a moisturiser, and wear SPF every morning.
