Skincare for Barrier Support

A healthy skin barrier holds moisture in and irritants out — supported by emollients and humectants.

How do you repair a damaged skin barrier?

Cut back first: pause exfoliating acids, retinoids and scrubs, and switch to a gentle cleanser. Then moisturise twice a day with barrier lipids — ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids — plus humectants like glycerin and soothing panthenol. Stinging, tightness and flaking usually ease as the barrier recovers, often over a few weeks.

Key ingredients for barrier support

  • Ceramides — the main barrier lipids; work best with cholesterol and fatty acids
  • Cholesterol — one of the three lipids the barrier is built from
  • Glycerin — draws in water and supports barrier function
  • Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) — soothes and helps the barrier repair
  • Niacinamide — helps skin make more of its own ceramides
  • Petrolatum — a protective seal over very dry or cracked patches

Common triggers to watch for: Fragrance / Parfum, Alcohol Denat.
